Greenburgh Town Board Having 9/11 Memorial Service

ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- The Greenburgh Town Board will have a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony at the beginning of its work session meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Board members will set aside extra time during their weekly meeting to remember victims of Sept. 11 in the Multipurpose Center at Anthony F. Veteran Park, 11 Olympic Lane.

"It's important not to forget this horrible tragedy and to remember the people that lost their lives," said Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

Feiner said the board will be joined by members of the Greenburgh Police Department and local fire departments to make statements and read the names of locals who lost their lives 11 years ago.

The board has a service for the date annually, Feiner said, and he encourages Greenburgh residents to attend and honor the victims' memories for their families and friends.

Last year, Sarah Bracey White, executive director of Greenburgh's arts and culture council, led a project to repair the then-10-year-old People's Memorial wall that honored Westchester residents who were victims of the terrorist attacks.

It's community projects and gatherings like those that keep the victims' memories alive, Bracey White said.

"I think that the sense of community is built around common memories and ideals," she said. "The 9/11 memory is such a strong one for all of us. When we gather together, we remember what it felt like."
