GREENBURGH, N.Y. If your glass of water looks a little sandier than usual over the next few weeks, don't be alarmed the Greenburgh Water Department will conduct a series of hydrant flow tests and flushing maintenance in Hartsdale from Monday, Oct. 22, through Nov. 9.
The flushing maintenance tests are usually done in the spring, said John Devany, Water and Sewer superintendent, but the department decided to pair up with the Hartsdale Fire Department's yearly hydrant flow tests so that Hartsdale residents don't have to deal water inconveniences twice in one year.
"We started out doing this in the spring, but the Fire Department tests in the fall. Why disturb an area twice?" Devany said.
The Hartsdale Fire Department will conduct hydrant flow tests from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Oct. 22 to Nov. 9, to assure all fire hydrants are working. At the same time sediments will be flushed out of residents' distribution systems.
During those three weeks, the Fire Department will work on different sections of town so that the neighborhood they are working on will experience water quality issues only for a day or two at a time, Devany said.
Discoloration from extra silt in tap water may result from the tests, which Devany said presents no health hazard just don't do your laundry with it, as it can stain the clothes. The flushing can also cause variations in water pressure.
Sections by neighborhood can be found on the Greenburgh town website. Devany said fliers will be posted in the neighborhoods beforehand to alert residents.
Residents are advised to monitor their water before doing laundry after Oct. 22 and to keep water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking.
