Greenburgh's Community Center to Get New Gym Floor

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - A hardwood gym floor at the Theodore D. Young Community Center that was destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Irene may be replaced by the end of this summer.

Commissioner William Carter told the Town Board by the end of May the warped floor will be torn up and concrete will be poured.

"Doesn't mean we'll have a basketball floor, but we will have use of it," Carter said. "By the end of summer, at the end of camp, it should be done. We continue to provide programs. It's not as if the programs are not happening."

Before the concrete is laid down, some asbestos abatement work must take place. That work will be bid out in about two weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of April.

Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) helped Greenburgh get some funding for the project, the total cost of which has not yet been determined, according to Carter.

Besides basketball, the gym is used extensively by the center for concerts, parties and a roller skating program. Since August, when the hurricane struck, programs have been relocated and kids have been bused to Woodlands High School, Westchester Community College, Stepinac and other schools.

"It looks like a skateboard park," Carter said of the current condition of the gym floor.
