GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Greenburgh dancer and choreographer Sidra Bell and her Sidra Bell Dance New York begins their annual performance season Thursday through Sunday, May 8-11 at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in Lower Manhattan.
Bell, who has just completed touring her dance company in Pittsburgh, New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Vancouver, Canada, is a world-renowned choreographer, graduate of Yale University (B.A.) and Purchase Conservatory.
The Dance NY consists of five dancers -- three men and two women who are in their 20s. All of the choreography is set by Bell, who does not dance in her company.
Bell recently visited Stuttgart, Germany, where she was selected as a judge for the renowned International Solo Dance Competition, which she had previously won twice. She is currently an adjunct professor of dance at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Bell said representatives of the Baruch Performing Arts Center have assisted in her work and offered to support her work by allowing her access to one of their two theaters for the yearly session of her modern dance company.
Bell describes her dance troupe as "a boutique company of prolific movement artists that presents innovative, kinetic and provocative dance theater works that present progressive, highly designed, cinematic, glamorous and elaborate full-scale productions."
Dance NY is self-supported and funded by individual donations. Bell's company is hosting a Kickstarter fundraising campaign for those interested in supporting the group.
