Greenburgh's Top Five Photos of 2011

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - With every story comes a photo, helping to tell the tale a little better. Since The Daily Greenburgh's launch on June 1, we have been committed to bringing the best photos we can to our readers.

We always ask our readers to send in their photos of the community. The pictures can accompany a resident's anger over new construction or tell the tale of their family's vacation. We always welcome reader-submitted photos.

Here are our top five photos of 2011:

1. A woman accidentally put her car in drive and careened off of a 30-foot embankment. Miraculously, members of the Greenburgh Police Department said, she lived and was not severely injured. The photo was courtesy of the police department.

2. A fire broke out at an apartment complex on Hartsdale Avenue. While the flames were caused by a space heater, all residents were asked to evacuate their apartments. The Hartsdale Fire Department led the fight and Fairview, Greenville and Scarsdale also arrived on the scene.

3. A car burst into flames in August at the then-recently-opened Burger King in Elmsford. When the driver was in the drive-thru, he noticed smoke coming from his hood and exited it with his family. Neither he nor the Elmsford Fire Department had answers for the flames.

4. A reader submitted photos of her family's Thanksgiving celebrations. They dined on turkey, pork shoulder, vegetables and, for dessert, apple pie.

5. While in the giving spirit, the R.J. Bailey Elementary School's student government organized a Thanksgiving food drive. The collected items were given to the Union Baptist Church. The student government also put together activity books for the children at Valhalla's Blythedale Children's Hospital.
