NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Imani Tilford and Teisha Hyman combined for 42 points Friday to lead the Woodlands High School girls basketball team to a 57-42 victory over Hampton Bays High School in the Class B state regional championship game at New Rochelle High School.
Tilford, a senior, led the way with 25 points 11 rebounds and 9 steals, and Hyman, a seventh-grader, added 17 points and seven assists for the high-flying Falcons.
Woodlands, now 13-10 after making the postseason with an 8-10 record, advanced to the Class B state Final Four and will play in a semifinal at Hudson Valley Community College in upstate Troy Friday, March 14, at noon.
"I never expected us to be at this point, winning a regional," Hyman said. "Imani leads us. She does it all and I help with the scoring, but we have to play as a team to win these games. This is a great win for us."
The Falcons used a pressure defense and a non-stop running offense with Tilford and Hyman finishing plays. Tilford scored 15 and Hyman 10 to help open a 30-25 halftime lead, then kept up the pressure as they built as 53-33 advantage early in the third quarter.
"They (Hampton) seemed to be tired trying to run with us," Hyman said. "We want to get as big a lead as we can and keep up the pressure."
