Gunfire Sounds at Indian Point, Just a Drill

Indian Point nuclear power plants

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Entergy will be conducting security drills at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants for nine days during the next three weeks. During the drills residents near the site will likely hear the realistic sound of gunfire The noise is simulated to make the drills as realistic as possible.

The noise is part of the “MILES” gear, standing for “Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Systems.” Participants in the drill will use laser guns, simulate ammunition sounds, and wear laser vests which can detect laser “bullets” emitted by the guns.

The “MILES” equipment is used across the country for counter terrorism and military training to simulate the effects of live cross-fire, without using real bullets.

The drills will take place on October 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18 and 20.
