Papovich and Patriot, who have responded to more than 1400 K9 related calls over their eight-year career, will join those remembering the service and sacrifice made by thousands of military canines and other service dogs. The event is open to the public. In 2007, an armed robbery suspect fled on foot and Patriot tracked him through the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery. The suspect was later arrested, according to Detective Papovitch. "Canine Patriot's connection to Hartsdale Pet Cemetery runs deep," said Edward Martin, Jr., the cemetery's director.  "He obtained his name in a contest conducted in all the schools in the Town of Greenburgh.  The winning second grade class was from Sacred Heart School, directly across from the cemetery." A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at The War Dog Memorial, a bronze German shepherd on a large granite rock, that was built in 1923 and was the first memorial to pay tribute to the 7,000 dogs that served in World War I. The War Dog Memorial celebration will include a Pet Adoption Day sponsored by the volunteers at Pet Rescue from Larchmont from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  A number of dogs and cats that are in need of good homes will be available for adoption.  Hartsdale’s War Dog Memorial is designated a landmark by the Westchester County's Office of Tourism and is listed in the Art Inventories Catalog of the Smithsonian. Hartsdale is the only pet cemetery listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is located at 75 Central Park Ave.
