HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- Some shop owners on East Hartsdale Avenue had a busy Sunday, not so much attending customers but pumping water out of their basements, inundated by tropical storm Irene.
We are pumping water since 4 a.m., said at 11 a.m. Yeon Kim, owner of Bagels & More, running back and forth her flooded basement.
Sometimes, when it rains, we get water down there, but obviously nothing like this, said her son and partner Steven Kim.
In fact, that stretch of East Hartsdale Avenue hasnt faced such severe flooding since 2007, when the combination of a storm and a clogged pipe inundated several shops and put some of their owners out of business.
Joseph Floriano, the owner of Enricos café and pastry shop, who wasnt there in 2007, didnt even want to talk Sunday morning, while helping his employees to drain the shop's basement. Down a few steps on the stairs, preparing the pump, he looked up and said, Not the time.
