Harvard Math Duo To Give Seminar in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – A pair of Harvard mathematicians are bringing their brainpower to Greenburgh.

Jonathan Farley and Edward Frenkel will hold back-to-back lectures next week, giving students, parents and community members a little insight into the world of math and education.

“We are delighted and very proud to present this program by these distinguished scholars,” said Greenburgh Central School District 7 Interim Superintendent Ronald Ross in a statement. “We can all learn something about mathematics from Drs. Farley and Frenkel.”

Frenkel, a Russian-born, award-winning mathematician who now teaches at the University of California at Berkeley, will give an hour-long presentation at Woodlands High School on June 1 at 10 a.m., titled “The Magic World of Math.”

The Harvard and Oxford educated Farley will follow with his lecture, “How to Get Straight A’s at Harvard.”

Farley, however, is no stranger to Greenburgh. For the past few months, the mathematician has been holding seminars teaching advanced math concepts to some of the district’s top-performing students.

But it hasn’t been without criticism. At a school board work session last month, some community members questioned the district’s decision to sign a $45,200 deal with Farley to conduct the four-month series.

The money provided compensation and covered travel expenses for Farley’s flights from Bangor, Maine, to New York City as well as his stay in a hotel, according to the contract he signed with the district.

Ross defended the spending last month during his meet and greet session as a superintendent candidate.

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance,” he said.

The June 1 workshop is open to the public and will come at no additional cost to the district, Ross said Thursday.
