The defeated referendum had proposed that the Hastings School District issue an $8.1 million bond and use $500,000 from its capital reserves to make district-wide improvements, including renovating or rebuilding the Reynolds Field athletic complex, which is in need of major repairs.
Residents who opposed the bond cited the plan to use artificial turf to replace the existing grass fields and the environmental consequences to the community as reasons for the no vote.
