A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain has been falling heavily in most of central and southern Westchester, coating the up to 9 inches of snow that fell Monday, since the pre-dawn hours. As the day goes on, the changeover to sleet and freezing rain will continue to move north.

Northern Westchester is seeing mainly snow, with some areas already having several inches of accumulation. Mount Kisco reported 3 inches of snow accumulation at 6 a.m. As much as 10-12 inches of accumulation is possible in Northern Westchester with up to a half-inch of ice.

Driving conditions are hazardous throughout the county and most school districts announced closures on Tuesday in advance of the arrival of the storm. New York City Public Schools remain open. Metro-North announced it is running on a reduced schedule.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service from midnight until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The mixed precipitation started past midnight and is expected to continue most of the day. Wednesday’s high will hover around the freezing mark.

With reduced visibility and icy road conditions expected, the National Weather Service advises residents to travel only if necessary.

Heavy snow/ice a accumulations could snap tree limbs and branches and bring down trees onto power lines, resulting in power outages. Customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). NYSEG customers should call 1.800.572.1131.

Thursday is expected to be partly sunny with a high between 28 and 30 degrees.

But don't put away your shovels: Another big storm may hit the area over the weekend. Storm models were still varying significantly as of Tuesday, however.
