Kennedy Catholic High Mourns Sullivan Family Loss

SOMERS, N.Y. – Thomas Sullivan Jr., the only surviving member of the Sullivan family lost in Tuesday’s devastating fire at their Carmel home, spent his adolescent years at Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers and graduated in 2010.

The school’s faculty and students have been deeply saddened by the loss of their alumnus’s family, and many friends and former friends have contacted the school to express condolences.

Alex Malecki, director of public relations, who taught freshman English to young Sullivan, said, “We had a prayer service for the family in the St. Mary’s Chapel yesterday. There were about 50 people there, students and faculty. There’s been a lot of feedback with the social media, Facebook and Twitter. Even a couple of Tommy’s old baby sitters have left notes.

“We’ve heard from parents and students who knew him, and some who didn’t know him but still wanted to express their sympathy.”

Thomas Sullivan Sr., 48; his wife, Donna, 47; and their two daughters, Meaghan, 17, and Mairead, 15, perished in the fire, which raged through their home in Carmel on Tuesday, May 1. The cause of the fire has not yet been established and is under police investigation.

A tangent to the tragedy, Malecki said, was that many parents have received unexpected calls and text messages from their sons and daughters, just to express love and appreciation.

Arrangements for the family are by the Balsamo-Cordovano Funeral Home, 15 Church St., Carmel. Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 3, and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at St. James the Apostle Church, 14 Gleneida Ave., Carmel.
