Are you a Spanish-speaker looking to learn English? Or an English-speaker looking to learn Spanish? Drop by the Greenburgh Public Library Wednesday afternoons for friendly faces and great discussions.
The conversation group is centered around the idea that people learn a language when immersed in conversation with native speakers. It enables the newcomer to understand nuances while developing their vocabulary.
"Every time we meet, each of us learns something new," said librarian Diana Lennon, the Spanish language liaison. "We not only improve our language skills, but make new friends and share many aspects of the cultures we represent. The participants are a global village right here in the library."
Greenburgh residents fluent in either language are encouraged to join the group and converse with each other as a way of learning the other language.
"All different types of people come," said Lennon. "People who had Spanish in high school or people who just came from another country show up."
Attendees range in age, from students trying to expand their knowledge for school to seniors who want to learn. All levels of English and Spanish are welcome.
The group meets Wednesdays at 2 p.m. They will convene on June 22 and 29 before taking a July hiatus. The conversations will resume on August 3.
