TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The Westchester Library System is offering free GED tutoring in nine more libraries this fall after it successfully tested a pilot program in Yonkers.
The GED Connect program began in 2009, with resources built around the GED web portal www.firstfind.org/ged . The portal provides instructional and informational resources for people who are seeking to get their high-school equivalency degree.
This summer, the Westchester Library System's Office of Community Connections began using the portal in the Yonkers Public Library computer lab. More than 40 volunteers were brought in and trained to help people understand the portal and get support for challenging subjects.
The goal of our GED support program is to engage people who do not identify themselves as learners -- to give them the tools, confidence and encouragement to overcome significant barriers, Robin Osborne, Director, Office of Community Connections, said. When we were testing the program, it became clear that many individuals needed considerable hand-holding to use the online tools and to gain some confidence. Our volunteers are vital to the success of each student.
Libraries in Greenburgh, Mamaroneck, Mt. Kisco, New Rochelle, Peekskill and Tarrytown have all begun regularly scheduled programs for the GED Connect program.
Getting a GED is a gateway to the future, and we are grateful to the libraries and local agencies for teaming up with us around this critical community need, Osborne said.
