A private funeral service is planned for Tuesday at Ferncliff Cemetery, the same place where Malcolm X and his late wife, Betty, are buried, ColorLines.com reported.
Shabazz was killed last week in a Mexico City bar following a dispute over a $1,200 tab. He was found beaten outside the bar with “blunt-force injuries” and later died at a Mexico City hospital.
On Monday, Mexican authorities charged two men, both waiters at the bar where Shabazz was killed, with murder and robbery, the BBC reported. Police said they continued to hunt for as many as three additional suspects involved in the attack.
On Friday, a large crowd of mourners were expected to gather at a traditional Islamic funeral service held for Shabazz in Oakland, Calif.
Shabazz, who had a troubled youth and spent time in detention facilities after setting a 1997 fire in Yonkers that killed his grandmother, had reportedly begun to turn back to his Islamic roots. He had also begun speaking out on activist issues and had begun writing books, according to the Gothamist.
In a statement, his family referred to him by his Islamic name El Hajj Malcolm El Shabazz.
“To all who knew him, he offered kindness, encouragement and hope for a better tomorrow,” they said.
