MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck officials banned the sale of puppy mill dogs in village pet stores on Monday night. Pet Rescue volunteers said Mamaroneck is the first and only municipality in New York state to adopt such a law.

The new law mandates that Mamaroneck pet stores sell cats and dogs from shelters and rescue groups, rather than commercially-bred animals. Mayor Norm Rosenblum initially proposed the law.

Laws banning the sale of animals from puppy mills have been enacted throughout the country, but Mamaroneck is the first in the state of New York, according to advocates.

“Here at Pet Rescue we know well the horrors of puppy mills and have worked hard to save as many victims as we could," said Pet Rescue President Paula Krenkel, which operates a rescue facility in Harrison.

"In our 30 years of saving animals in need, we have rescued many puppy mill moms thrown away after years of producing litter after litter, and have saved countless others from desperate and inhumane conditions. Pet Rescue applauds this new law and hope it sets first a statewide and then nationwide precedent," Krenkel said on Tuesday.

Pet Rescue is a nonprofit animal rescue organization that holds meet and greets most weekends at their Harrison facility at 7 Harrison Ave., including Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The organization has saved more than 15,000 animals.
