Murder Suspect Probed for Link to Lauren Spierer

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – An Indiana police detective is looking into a possible connection between missing Edgemont High graduate Lauren Spierer and a suspect in multiple murders in New Albany, Ind. But the Bloomington, Ind., Police Department is downplaying the matter.

Spierer was 20 years old and finishing her sophomore year at Indiana University in Bloomington when she disappeared June 3 after a night of partying with friends.

According to published reports, the New Albany Police Department has charged William Clyde Gibson, 54, in the deaths of a 75-year-old woman found dead April 19 in Gibson's New Albany home and the 2002 death of a Florida hairdresser, whose body was found near the Ohio River. Another body, that of a 35-year-old woman, was found Friday in Gibson's backyard.

The New Albany Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Bloomington Police Capt. Joseph Qualters issued the following statement Thursday afternoon:

"A detective from the Bloomington Police Department has been assigned to make an inquiry with investigators in New Albany regarding the Clyde Gibson case they are investigating. We view this as the responsible thing to do as part of our ongoing investigation and it is much like the inquiries we make on unidentified bodies that become known to us from other jurisdictions. We have no indication that there is any connection to Lauren's case, but we are certainly interested in anyone who comes to the attention of law enforcement for targeting women as victims. That is the sole purpose for the inquiry."
