New Greenburgh Assemblyman Exudes Experience

For starters, state Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D/Greenburgh) wanted change. With a vast background in law and the Westchester community, his 30-plus years as an elected official have shown his steadfastness in government.

"I serve in public office to make things better," said Abinanti. "I understand our community and its needs as well as anyone does. And I use the government to make our community a better place."

Abinanti was elected to the Assembly in November 2010 after serving 19 years as a county legislator. His primary goal is to continuously develop the area and make it a safer, healthier and first-rate place to live.

Abinanti moved to Greenburgh in 1975. He was initially attracted by the area's quality of life, but stayed because of people. Active in the community, he is a practicing attorney and currently resides in Orchard Hill.

As a legislator, Abinanti chaired the Environment and Energy Committee, pushing for cleaner air and water in the county, as well as opening parks and cleaning land. In addition, he chaired the committees of Rules, Legislation, Health and Community Affairs.

"The environment is my main focus," Abinanti said. "Preserving and improving our air, our water and our land use. I've always had an interest in using law to protect our environment. I want to use government and law to make our environment a better place."

Abinanti served as a town councilman for six years, represented the Greenburgh Housing Authority and did pro bono attorney work for the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion. He is also an advocate for disabilities and gun control.

Abinanti received his Juris Doctorate from New York University of Law and his bachelor's degree from Fordham University. In the past, he has taught courses at Pace Law School and Mercy College.

In his free time, Abinanti enjoys sailing on the Hudson River, as well as working as a volunteer boating instructor.
