GREENBURGH, N.Y. Traffic on Greenburgh's Route 9A, heading south out of Elmsford, could get congested toward the end of the week.
From roughly Aug. 29 to Sept. 31, the New York State Department of Transportation will be paving the one-and-a-half-mile stretch of Route 9A from Babbitt Court south to Park Avenue.
"I think it is necessary and will improve the quality of life for the people who live in the area," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, noting that it is a piece of land that needs to be repaved. "It will be better for the community and for motorists."
While street construction is expected to take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., both Feiner and Greenburgh Police Chief Joseph DeCarlo do not foresee many delays.
"There will be traffic moving on one lane," said a representative of the state's Department of Transportation. "When we pave, one lane is going to be open, so there might be some delays in traffic."
DeCarlo said that cars and buses will be asked to slow down, but the paving should not warrant any major stoppages. The Department of Transportation did not ask a Greenburgh police car to stay at the construction area in case of accidents.
Even though Babbitt Court is right on the cusp of Elmsford, Mayor Robert Williams said that the construction should not "cause too much havoc" for his residents. He added that the Beeline Bus transportation system whose buses 1C, 1W, 5, 11, 13, 14 and 27 run through Elmsford has been notified about the possibility of delays.
If paving is interrupted due to rain, the Department of Transportation will continue its project next week.
