TARRYTOWN, N.Y. New York State Police talked a 55-year-old New Rochelle man out of jumping from the Tappan Zee Bridge on Sunday afternoon after he had climbed down onto the scaffolding on the southbound side of the bridge.
After an hour or so of negotiation he agreed to surrender to our members who were on the catwalk underneath the bridge and then we utilized the fire department to just put a little harness around him to help him up the ladder for his own safety, said New York State Police Sgt. John Antonelli.
Police said the man parked his car in the right lane and got out near mile marker 14.1 of the southbound side of the bridge. The man used access ladders that bridge workers use to climb down to the scaffolding, police said.
The same ladders he climbed down police utilized for the same purpose, Antonelli said.
Police said the man was brought back to state police barracks before being transported to the Westchester Medical Center for a mental evaluation. Police received a 911 call about the potential jumper at 1:06 p.m. and had him in custody at 2:09 p.m. before clearing the bridge of remaining emergency vehicles.
