Program To Educate Greenburgh Parents On Asthma

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Hartsdale Kiwanis Club made the most common chronic illness among children a priority this month when its members put together an asthma education program, set to take place Wednesday at the Greenburgh Public Library.

Kiwanis member and Distinguished Past President Claudia White said the club decided to sponsor the event after Bill Risbrook, New York District Kiwanis governor, chose childhood asthma awareness as his main project for the year.

"Kiwanis wanted to really embellish that idea and reach out to parents of children with asthma," White said. "Seeing this program may save the life of a child."

The asthma program might be coming at the perfect time of the year -- Tuesday's pollen count forecast for Greenburgh projects for "extreme" levels, according to , and days with high pollen counts tend to see a greater number of emergency room visits for people with asthma, the New York State Department of Health reported.

Wednesday's free seminar, titled "Your Child's Asthma: What Parents and Caregivers Need to Know," will also feature Jacqueline Rubino, director of the Hudson Valley Asthma Coalition, a local branch of the American Lung Association.

White said that the Hartsdale Kiwanis Club will also be making a donation to the Lung Association as part of the event.

The Hartsdale Kiwanis Club holds fundraisers throughout the year to sponsor monthly projects like Wednesday's, White said -- its biggest fundraiser being the annual Kiwanis Carnival hosted in Richard Presser Park over Labor Day weekend.

"The money we make fundraising is always returned back to the community," White said. "We reinvest in the community to help those in need."

Cory Deitchman, assistant to the director of the Greenburgh Public Library, said the Children's Library will be co-sponsoring the event, slated for 7 p.m. at the library, 300 Tarrytown Road in Elmsford. For more information on the event, see the events listing page.
