GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Wednesday's Town Board public hearing on the proposal to build 272 apartments on Lawrence Street near downtown Ardsley made town history.

According to Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, for the first time ever, the town was unable to accommodate the hundreds of residents who attended and wished to testify against the proposed development. The auditorium was overcrowded and filled to capacity. Many people were forced to watch the meeting on TV monitors or in other rooms, while others left in frustration because they unable to find a seat to watch.

Everyone who spoke expressed opposition to the proposal, citing traffic, school, flooding, pollution and parking concerns - among others. Recognizing the possibility that the developer will choose to proceed with the application, mitigation suggestions were made by many of those who testified as well. The Town Board is required by law to review land use applications.

The Town Board has scheduled a second scoping hearing for Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Greenburgh Town Hall.
