GREEENBURGH, N.Y. – The Greenburgh Central 7 Board of Education has hired a search firm to help them find the school district's new superintendent.
As current superintendent Ronald Smalls is set to retire at the end of the month, with Dr. Sidney Freund acting as interim superintendent until June 30, 2012, the board recently hired the consulting firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates from Rosemont, IL, to assist them in bringing in a fitting replacement.
"This is one of the biggest responsibilities we have as the board of education," said member Claudia Glaser. "We want [the new superintendent] to meet the requirements of the district, and we're certainly taking it very seriously. We want to get it right. And the kids deserve the best possible person in here."
School board president Terry Williams said that not only will they listen to the consulting firm's advice but will also heed the public's feedback to find the most suitable person for the job.
The board of education chose the consulting firm because of its vast experience working on searches for school districts of all sizes, and conducted Mount Vernon's search several years ago, said Williams. They will work hand-in-hand with consultant Dr. Marvin Edwards, who used to be a school superintendent.
"We were looking for a firm that would not only meet our needs but the community's needs as well," said Glaser. "We want a superintendent to provide what Greenburgh Central 7 needs and will be here for the long haul."
The new superintendent will begin his/her position on July 1, said Williams. In the meantime, residents have expressed delight that the board chose Dr. Freund as interim superintendent, as he served as interim superintendent prior to Smalls' term.
"We were happy that he came back and that he was available," said Williams. "We all have fond memories of his tenure here."
"Most people I've come in contact with are pleased with Sidney Freund's position," said Glaser. "I feel very confident that we're bringing in someone very confident."

He has decided to enjoy his life and I have no closure after what he did to me as the principal of the Nassau Boces school CCA in Wantagh. He used my diploma as a weapon at tax payers expense, just because I was under 21 years of age. So far I have not received a certificate of completion or a key chain after what I had done and mostly for NO PAY! He had also chosen to give me a homeroom teacher that chose to create a hostile and noisy environment to study in. I wish he would convince me that I didn't deserve a friendly homeroom teacher. He still has no remorse for his actions. Can anybody explain to me why this is?!
