The 9/11 Decade: Greenburgh Rededicates 9/11 Wall

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Here are three events happening this weekend in Greenburgh and surroundings to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

5K Annual 9/11 Memorial Run

The 2011 Annual 9/11 Memorial 5K run will happen Saturday, starting at the Great Hunger Memorial at V.E. Macy Park on Route 9A, in Ardsley. Runners who have not yet registered should arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. The registration costs $20 and opens at 8 a.m. All funds will be directed to the Gift of Life, a Rotary Clubs program that helps children who needs heart surgery but can’t have it in their countries. The event is organized by Greenburgh’s Department of Parks and Recreation and co-sponsored by the Westchester Road Runners Club, Westchester County and the Rotary District 7230.

People's Memorial

On Sunday at 10 a.m., The Town of Greenburgh will remember the victims of 9/11 in front of the People Memorial’s monument at Richard Presser Park on Central Park Ave, in Hartsdale. The monument’s memorial wall, whose 1,830-tile mosaic was renovated in August , will be rededicated during the ceremony. A piece of steel from the World Trade Canter that the Port Authority donated to the town will be added to the monument in the future.

Westchester County ceremony at Kensico Dam Plaza

Westchester County will hold a ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday at the county’s 9/11 memorial, The Rising, located at the Kensico Dam Plaza, in Valhalla.

County Executive Rob Astorino, other elected officials and families of the 111 Westchester County residents who died that day are expected to attend.

The event will include a candle lighting ceremony to honor those that were lost during the tragedy ten years ago.

The annual event will be held during twilight hours in order to allow residents to attend other 9/11 memorials being held around the county.
