GREENBURGH, N.Y. Mothers wont be the only ones celebrating Sunday.
Florists, department stores and even restaurants have been cashing also. Roughly 87 percent of Americans will celebrate Mother's Day, showering moms with flowers, greeting cards or gifts and shelling out more than $18 billion in the process, according to an annual survey from the National Retail Federation.
The average person will spend $152 for Mom's big day, up from $140 last year, BIGinsight reports.
While still very mindful of their finances, consumers will open their wallets a little more this year to ensure Mothers Day is extra special for the women in their lives, Phil Rist, executive vice president of BIGinsight, said in a press release.
The most popular gift is a greeting card, the surveyor found. Flowers and a special outing, like dinner or brunch, rounded out the top three for 2012.
In Greenburgh Friday, shoppers said they too are opening their wallets. But mom Sayra Perez said it is less about the gifts and more about quality time with her family.
Its a gift when you have kids, Perez said while browsing cards at the Tarrytown Road Kmart. Mothers day is about being with family. Its a more special day.
Norman Grant said he plans to treat his mom to a Mothers Day brunch.
Its a day to show your mom how much you appreciate her, he said.
