Tara Ramirez of Hartsdale was presented with a check March 22. She purchased her winning ticket at the Dairydel grocery on South Central Avenue. Ramirez opted for a one-time sum of $43.6 million, for a net winning of $28.9 million. The money will mean "financial security for me and my family for years to come," she said.
Perhaps Ramirez brought hope to lottery players in November, when the Powerball jackpot hit a record of more than a half-billion dollars. The lottery, with an estimated 1-in-175 million odds, had Greenburgh vendors scrambling to keep up with lines full of hopeful winners several days before the numbers were drawn Nov. 28.
Those who hold winning tickets aren't the only ones to benefit from lotteries — the stores that sell tickets make a commission on each ticket sold and also receive a fraction of the winnings if it sells the winning ticket. The Hartsdale Dairydel received a one-time selling bonus of $10,000 in March.
