GREENBURGH, N.Y. In response to August's hurricane, October's snow, and the intermittent rain, the town of Greenburgh is canceling recycling this to week to focus on leaf removal.
Residents are asked to hold onto their glass, plastics and papers so that the town can dispose of the fallen leaves and tree branches before the December snow hits and renders the debris unmovable.
In addition, workers from the sanitation and highway departments have been asked to work overtime on Saturday, Dec. 3 to collect leaves and storm debris in areas that have been left unattended. For example, roads branching off of Payne Street on the Greenburgh/Elmsford border have several hefty piles of wet leaves sitting curbside. The Saw Mill River and Sprain Brook parkways have also been criticized for their lack of debris removal.
Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner plans to meet with the departments next week to discuss how much work still needs to be done to clear the roads in preparation for the winter's snow. Another Saturday of overtime could be approved for Dec. 10, if necessary. Each day of overtime will cost the town $35,000.
