WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- White Plains residents can enjoy the cool of two city pools an extra hour this weekend when temperatures are expected to hover in the 90s.

The Town of Greenburgh also announced extended hours during the heat wave at Massaro Pool in North Elmsford.

White Plains' newly-renovated Kittrell Pool will stay open an extra hour, to 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Kittrell Pool is located at the corner of Fisher Avenue and Irving Place. Its entrance is on Fisher Avenue.

Gardella Pool will stay open an extra hour, to 7:30 p.m., on Saturday. Gardella Pool is located on Ferris Avenue and can be accessed from the Church Street Elementary School parking lot.

In North Elmsford, Massaro Pool will open an hour earlier on Friday, at 3 p.m. and stay open 45 minutes later until 7:45 p.m. Weekend hours are normally 1 to 7 p.m., but the Town of Greenburgh pool will stay open until 7:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday if the heat wave continues, town officials said.

After a year of renovation, Kittrell Pool reopened to the public this week and is ready to host some serious summer fun. Built in 1970, this pool has been a fixture in White Plains for nearly 50 years.

At Wednesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony, White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach said, “Kittrell Pool has always seen heavy usage by camp groups and residents. This investment ensures that all White Plains residents will have a high quality aquatic facility.”

The new pool utilized a portion of the old pool shell and then expanded upon it. In addition to its modernized pool design, the pool now has a new operating system, a new deck surface, lap lanes, improvements to changing rooms, lockers and showers and new patio and lifeguard chairs.

The city also made improvements to make the pool more accessible. Improvements include: zero-depth entry, ideal for small children, an ADA compliant walkway, entrances, bathrooms, exits, showers, changing rooms and a new aquatic wheelchair and lift assist.

Both city pools' normal hours are from noon to 6:30 p.m. daily. Kittrell Pool stays open until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Gardella Pool stays open until 7:30 pm on Thursdays.

White Plains Recreation and Parks Commissioner Wayne Bass said, “Our residents can now enjoy a modern pool design and new features.”

Pool admission is free to those with a valid Rec/Parks identification card, which can be purchased at the Rec/Parks Office at 85 Gedney Way.
