As Roland Garros winds to a close and sports fans anticipate the final match between the world's best clay-courters, Hartsdale's Woodlands tennis team cheers for their favorite man.
The French Open men's final is between top seed Rafael Nadal and third seed Roger Federer . Seemingly unbeatable in past years, the muscular, bandana-wearing Nadal, entered the second week slightly less impressive than in the past.
While the five-time French Open champion struggled to control several matches during the opening rounds, he is in the final for the sixth time in seven years. The Woodlands girl's tennis team said that Nadal can overpower Federer and win a sixth French Open trophy.
"Rafa's my favorite player," said Precious Blake, a junior. "I've been watching tennis to help me play tennis. I like his versatility. He's always willing to get the ball, whether it's low or high. Looking at him helps me in practice as a reference."
Shaina Weir, a junior, said Nadal should take the title because he mixes up his shots and is not predictable for others to take advantage of.
"Occasionally, I like to watch tennis," said captain Justina Mark, a junior. "I like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic . But probably Nadal will win."
However, Tom Tokarski, the varsity tennis coach, foresaw Serbia's Djokovic winning the Roland Garros title. Entering the tournament, Djokovic was unbeaten in 2011, but lost to Federer in the semifinals. Nadal was Tokarski's second pick.
The head-to-head between Nadal and Federer is 16-8. To see who will win, watch the Roland Garros men's final on Sunday, June 5 at 9 a.m. on NBC.
