“I’m flabbergasted,” she said. “All’s I can say is wow.”
Martin will be one of 92 families moving into the city’s newest affordable housing complex, a $32 million sparkling new building at 49 N. Broadway, later this fall. On Thursday, she was on hand as city officials and business leaders unveiled the project, more than five years in the making.
“This is a great day for the city of Yonkers,” Mayor Mike Spano said. “This project here is for people from Yonkers who want nothing more than to live in this glorious city.”
The 12-story building in downtown Yonkers, near the corner of Warburton Avenue and Dock Street, is the result of collaboration between public, private and nonprofit groups. Together, the groups came together to “deliver the goal of quality housing wanted be working families,” said Jonathan Cortell, vice president of L&M Development Partners, the group behind the project.
Tenants eligible to move into the mix of studio, one-, two-and three-bedroom apartments will make no more than 60 percent of Westchester County’s median income.
When they do, they will be welcomed with scenic views of the Hudson River, access to a fitness center and laundry facilities as well as bamboo flooring and stainless steel appliances.
While touring a model apartment on the 10th floor, Watson said she couldn’t ask for anything more.
“You work so hard and it’ll be nice to come home to a place like this,” she said.
