HARTSDALE, N.Y. - Barbara A. Schoonmaker, a longtime Hartsdale resident, died May 27. She was 75.

Schoonmaker was born July 12, 1937, in New Rochelle to George and Esther McGayhey Higbee. She was a graduate of Mamaroneck High School. She worked for the Board of Elections and volunteered on the Conference Committee for the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs from 1975-2005. She was a member of several bowling leagues including the Sacred Heart Bowling League for 45 years where she served as treasurer. She also served on the Sacred Heart Parish Counsel. She was the brains behind the babysitting course at the Hartsdale Fire Department which has run continuously for 40 years and has graduated well over 1000 babysitters.

Schoonmaker is survived by her husband, Walter of Hartsdale; children; Cheryl (Bob) Cummins of White Plains, Kathy (Tony) LoGiudice of White Plains, Patti McMorrow of Hartsdale and Nancy (Kevin) Pease of Alexandria, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, George Higbee; and sister, Sonia Reilling.

Calling hours are Wednesday, May 29 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, May 30 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home Inc. , 491 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 31 at Sacred Heart Church, 10 Lawton Ave., Hartsdale. Interment in Greenwood Union Cemetery, North St., Rye.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church , the Make a Wish Foundation or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
