GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Nettie Jackson, a longtime community resident and supporter of the Greenburgh School District and its children, died peacefully at home Tuesday.

Greenburgh Central Schools Superintendent Ronald O. Ross said Wednesday that school flags would be flown at half mast in Jackson's honor.

"Greenburgh Central has lost not only a beloved member of our community, but a true advocate for our children," Ross said. "Our hearts go out to her family and the entire community who are mourning her loss and will greatly miss her presence."

Jackson was honored last February during a celebration of Black History Month by students at Lee F. Jackson Elementary School, which was named for her son who was killed in a plane crash in 1996 on a trip to Bosnia at the age of 37.

Lee F. Jackson attended the school named for him and graduated from Woodlands High School. He was executive director of the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development in London.
