Ira Levy, 97, Ardsley WWII Veteran

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Ira Manning Levy of Ardsley died June 14. He was 97.

Levy grew up in Bronx, N.Y., the youngest of five children born to Sam and Minnie Levy. An Army veteran, he served in France and Germany during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant.

Prior to his military service, Levy received a bachelor's degree from City College of New York and a law degree from New York University. Levy worked as legal counsel for G&G Precision Instrument Corp. before becoming a partner. The company later became G&G Instrument Corp. of Ardsley and he remained a principal and CEO for over 60 years.

Levy also worked as a professional singer and musician. In the late 1930s, he operated radio shows on WNBC and WMCA in New York City, using the stage name Bert Manning.

He served on the boards of Greenburgh Savings Bank and People's Westchester Savings Bank from 1971 to 1991. Levy was an avid golfer and a member of Elmwood Country Club in White Plains for more than 40 years.

He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, May, on March 26; and a son, Jonathan, in 1986. He is survived by a son, Hal (Barbara) of Westport, Conn.; and two grandchildren.

Levy will be privately interred at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale. A memorial service will be held on June 28 at G&G Instrument Corp. in Ardsley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester .
