Nancy Whitten, 87, Former Rye Resident Who Taught In Connecticut

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y./FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Nancy (Freck) Whitten, 87, of South Hadley, Mass. died July 13, with her family at her side after a brief illness.

Born in Perrysburg, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Stanley G. Freck and Josephine C. Freck.

She graduated from high school in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., and from Mount Holyoke College in 1949.

She was a kindergarten teacher in Madison, Conn., and also taught for 15 years at the Sunny Hill Children’s Center in Greenwich, Conn., a renowned haven for autistic and special needs children.

After Sunny Hill Children’s Center closed, Whitten worked as a secretary in her husband Dr. William W. Whitten’s pediatric practice in Larchmont for five years.

The couple resided in Rye, N.Y. until retirement when they split their time between St. Croix and Greensboro, Vt.

Whitten leaves behind her husband of 40 years, Dr. William W. Whitten, of South Hadley, her sister, Eve Switzer of Falmouth, Mass., her brother Peter Freck of Ashburn, Va., daughter Melinda Peabody of San Rafael, Calif., stepdaughters Betsy Dennison of Pompton Lakes, N.J., Kathy Cihi of Norwalk, Conn., Anne Falk of Bend, Ore. and stepson Skip Whitten of Old Lyme, Conn., and grandsons Grier and Tyler Blumenschine and nine stepgrandchildren. 

She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Peabody.

All services will be private.
