Walter Evans Crawford, 83, Of Elmsford, Korean War Veteran

ELMSFORD, N.Y. - Walter "Curly" Evans Crawford of Elmsford died Wednesday, Oct. 22. He was 83.

Crawford was born Dec. 10, 1930, to Walton Crawford and Margaret Cullen Crawford. He was educated in New Rochelle graduating from Isaac E. Young High School before joining the Air Force and serving in Japan during the Korean War. In 1958, he joined the Tuckahoe Police Department as a patrol officer and was promoted to sergeant, detective sergeant, lieutenant and finally chief of police. He retired on May 31, 1993.

Crawford is survived by his wife, Katherine; daughters, Margaret Crawford, Kathleen Simonetti (Anthony), Diane Fennell (Tom) and Donna Eastman (Richard); five grandchildren; and brother, Donald (Anne Rowan). He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Frederick Crawford.

Calling hours are Saturday, Oct. 25 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 26 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 72 East Main St., Elmsford, NY 10523. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Cremation to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Crawford's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
