Last week's horrible train tragedy highlights the need for immediate safety initiatives at train crossings.
I interviewed Robert Comer of Angels on Track Foundation on my WVOX AM radio program Friday morning. Mr. Comer is an expert on U.S. railroad crossings. He has investigated more than 400 grade crossing crashes nationwide and has testified as an expert witness.
An easy immediate action that Metro-North and other rail lines could take would be to place large billboards at every crossing with warnings of the dangers of the crossings. Large billboards could provide motorists with an extra warning -- and encourage people to be more aware of the dangers.
I am planning to write to Metro-North and other lawmakers and will request the billboards at every crossing.
Comer also believes that commuter trains should have seat belts on each of the seats. He believes that seat belts could have saved lives in previous crossing accidents.
