McNerney, the Commanding Officer of the Detective Division of the Greenburgh Police Department, will be sworn in by Judge Les Adler, a former Town Councilman at 7:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the swearing in ceremony, which will be followed by the Town Board meeting.
"We thank the Chief (DeCarlo) for his dedication, hard work and professionalism," Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said in a Facebook post. "Crime, under his watch, has been at historic low levels."
Feiner said McNerney's experience through several divisions of the department makes him an excellent leader.
"Chief-designee McNerney, who also has a law degree, has extensive experience working in different divisions and is well qualified to continue the Police Department's tradition of excellent leadership. He is also involved in local community activities."
