UPDATED AT 8 P.M. THURSDAY:
YONKERS, N.Y. -- Several firefighters suffered minor injuries Thursday battling a major blaze at a 99 cent store on Yonkers' South Broadway.
The fire took several hours to extinguish. The matter was made more difficult, fire officials said, because of the cold temperatures. However, no hydrants were frozen.
"Virtually every firefighter in the City of Yonkers is on the scene right now," Mayor Mike Spano told The Daily Voice.
The fire, at 371 South Broadway, was a four-alarm blaze. It is not yet known how it started. Thomas F. Fitzpatrick Jr., deputy chief of personnel for the Yonkers Fire Department, said about 80 firefighters helped extinguish the fire, which began at around 4 p.m.
Mutual aid from Hartsdale, Mount Vernon, Eastchester and New Rochelle were called to man fire stations, he said.
In addition to firefighters and police, the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management, the Red Cross and Con Edison were also on the scene.
Carolyn Sherwin from the Red Cross said the organization had many volunteers at the scene.
"It's all hands on deck," she said.
The Red Cross was preparing to open a reception area for the people in the neighboring residential building, which suffered smoke and water damage, she said. She said Thursday night she did not know whether anyone would be displaced because of the fire.
Spano said the building and those around it were all evacuated. There were no reported injuries.
Jorge Torres, 16, lives in a neighboring building with his mom and sisters. He said he is hoping the fire didn't spread to his building and said his family smelled smoke and evacuated themselves.
The smoke was visible from the Saw Mill River Parkway. Katiria Gonzalez from Yonkers said she saw the fire all the way from her home on School Street.
