A carload of juveniles in a stolen car took police on a high-speed chase early Friday from the City of Poughkeepsie before being stopped in the Town of Amenia, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

The event took place around 1:15 a.m. when sheriff's deputies responded to a call for help from the City of Poughkeepsie Police to stop the vehicle which wasn't complying, said Capt. John Watterson.

Once the vehicle was outside the city limits the Sheriff’s Office assumed the lead role and continued attempting to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then continued to travel without stopping until it got to Route 22 in Amenia, at which time stop sticks were deployed and the vehicle complied, Watterson said.

While the vehicle was trying to escape, information was coming in from Ulster County that it was possibly stolen, and one of the passengers may have been abducted, he added.

One stopped, an investigation revealed that all six of the occupants were juveniles, and there was no abduction, however, the vehicle was stolen from one of their relatives in Ulster County, Watterson reported.

The vehicle owner's declined to press charges for the theft, and so the five passengers were released to their parents. The operator, a 15-year-old male, was arrested and charged as a juvenile for his actions related to the failure to comply and he will appear in court at a later date.

The identities of all involved are being withheld due to their ages.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police.
