In the Greenburgh Police Department's annual report, 643 Part 1 Offenses were logged in throughout 2012 — a decrease from 768 in 2011 and 730 in 2010, according to police. Part 1 Offenses are what the United States Department of Justice considers serious crimes, including aggravated assault, burglary, homicide, larceny, motor vehicle theft, robbery and rape.
Robbery and motor vehicle theft, with 16 and 34 cases respectively, were the only offenses that increased in number, according to the report.
However, the number of Part 2 Offenses, which are considered less-serious crimes, increased by 8 percent, Greenburgh police reported. Fraud, criminal mischief and drug incidents kept numbers high, with a total of 1,305 Part 2 Offenses reported to Greenburgh police in 2012.
The number of DWI cases, simple assault and sex offenses excluding rape were some of the Part 2 Offenses that decreased.
Greenburgh Police Chief Joe DeCarlo said earlier this month that police have been making an effort to lower the number of burglaries, which in 2012 were at their lowest in six years.
"We did try to be proactive and get the word out," said DeCarlo about burglary incidents. "I think it paid off."
Other decreases included the number of arrests, felony charges and misdemeanor charges issued by Greenburgh police. Police made 1,259 arrests in 2012, a 15 percent decrease from 2011.
In addition, 4,682 parking tickets were handed out by police in 2012.
Greenburgh police use the New York State Incident Based Reporting System, which reports multiple offenses committed during the same incident, to compile statistics.
