Greenburgh Cop To Plead Not Guilty To Misdemeanors

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The Greenburgh police officer charged with damaging his house and harassing his wife Nov. 22 will plead not guilty, said his attorney, Andrew Quinn.

Quinn said he still is gathering information for the case involving Officer Richard Barros, 35, who is being charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree aggravated harassment, both misdemeanors.

At a court appearance Friday, Judge Delores Brathwaite granted Barros permission to return to his house, which he had been restricted from entering since the alleged incident, to gather his computer and other belongings.

Barros, who has been a member of the Greenburgh Police Department for about three years, has been suspended from duty without pay until further notice, said Greenburgh Police Lt. Brian Ryan.

Greenburgh police arrested Barros at 2 a.m. Nov. 22 after responding to a smoke condition at Barros's home in Hartsdale.

Barros told police he had lit the fireplace to his home and did not realize the chimney flue was closed, causing the house to fill with smoke. Barros was alone at the time, and the smoke reportedly damaged bedroom furniture, lamps and various glass frames, according to police reports.

Police said Barros also made harassing phone calls to his wife.

His next Town of Greenburgh Court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 7.
