Greenburgh Crime Report: Car Thefts Up, Burglaries Down, Fraud On The Rise

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Greenburgh Police Department released its year-to-year crime statistics on Friday, and the annual report contained good news, but some bad news.

Greenburgh Police Chief Chris McNerney said that burglaries were down in 2015 compared to the previous year. There were 52 burglary reports last year compared to 63 in 2014, McNerney said.

Motor vehicle thefts, meanwhile saw a steep increase this past year, the police chief said. There were 28 auto thefts in 2015 compared to 16 the previous year, a 75 percent increase.

Violent crime reports did not change much from year to year. There was one murder in 2015, and none in 2014; there were four rapes last year compared to five in 2014, and there were 16 robberies in 2015, down from 19 the previous year. Assault reports went unchanged year-to-year at 28.

Greenburgh police, like other departments locally and nationally, experienced a significant rise in frauds and forgeries carried out via the phone and/or internet. There were 289 reports of fraud/forgery last year compared to 197 in 2014, police said, or a 47 percent annual increase.

Meanwhile, there was a decrease in arrests for drunken driving, criminal mischief, drug offenses and sex offenses.
