Greenburgh Lockdown Incident Being Investigated

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Greenburgh police are still searching for an armed man in an attempted robbery that caused three Greenburgh schools to be placed on lockdown on Tuesday.

Woodlands High School and Middle School, Maria Regina High School and Solomon Schechter Upper and Middle School were all placed on lockdown after Greenburgh police responded to the robbery of a 17-year-old Woodlands High School student.

The boy was walking to school around 8:50 a.m. on a dirt road through the woods that leads to Woodlands High School when an adult male approached him and demanded his cell phone and backpack, police said. When the boy did not comply, the man lifted his jacket and displayed a gun, according to police reports. The boy told police he gave him his property and ran away.

The boy went to the nearby Metropolis Golf Club and told maintenance workers there what had happened. One of the workers called police. The boy returned to the scene,  which is in the vicinity of Fair Street and Juniper Hill Road, before police arrived and found his phone and backpack. None of his property was reported missing, police said.

Police searched for the suspect matching the boy's description: a clean-shaven black man with short, dark hair, a light green jacket, light-colored pants and black boots.

Members of the Greenburgh Police SWAT Team, Westchester County Police Department Aviation Unit and K-9 Unit did not find the suspect. As a precaution, Woodlands High School and Middle School, Maria Regina High School and Solomon Schechter Upper and Middle School were placed on temporary lockdown. It was lifted later Tuesday.

The incident comes just one day after Solomon Schechter Upper and Middle School was dismissed early after a bomb threat on Monday.

Tuesday's incident is still being investigated by Greenburgh police. Anyone with information on the incident should call the Greenburgh Police Detective Division at 914-682-5325.
