Greenburgh Police officers responded to a call Monday, Oct. 27, regarding a 50-year-old woman bleeding heavily from a dislodged dialysis shunt.

The woman had lost a significant amount of blood due to an arterial hemorrhage in the bicep area of her arm, police said.

Freeman applied a military combat-style tourniquet, which stabilized the woman’s condition. She was transported to the White Plains Hospital, where she was expected to recover.

The tourniquet used was acquired through the U.S. Department of Defense Excess Property Program, which provides excess equipment to local and state law enforcement officers.?

Monday was the first time the Greenburgh Police Department had used the combat-style tourniquet, according to department spokesman Lt. Michael D’Alessio.
