Richard A. Barros, 35, of Hartsdale, has been charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree aggravated harassment, both misdemeanors, Greenburgh police said.
Officers responded to a possible smoke condition at Barros' home on Moore Street, police said. He had lit a Duraflame log and filled his home with smoke at about 2 a.m. Thursday, police said. Barros told firefighters and police officers that he didn't realize his chimney flue was closed, police said. Barros was alone at his house at the time, police said.
He damaged property throughout his house, including bedroom furniture, glass frames and lamps, police said. Barros is also accused of making several phone calls to his wife that alarmed her, police said.
Greenburgh police say Barros has been relieved of duty pending disposition of the charges. He will appear in Greenburgh Town Court on Friday, Nov. 30.
