YONKERS, N.Y. - A four-alarm fire in a Caryl Avenue apartment building in Yonkers has displaced more than 90 residents, the Yonkers Fire Department said.

Shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday morning, firefighters responded to 28 Caryl Ave. after a fire sparked on the third floor of the five-story building, quickly spreading to the upper floors, trapping several residents.

According to Yonkers Deputy Chief of Personnel Thomas Fitzpatrick, there were people trapped in a pair of fifth floor apartments. In total, firefighters rescued three adults and three children, leading them down the fire escapes to safety.

Fire companies from Greenville, New Rochelle, Hartsdale and Mount Vernon were on hand to assist the four-alarm fire, several of which needed to be treated by medical personnel. It is undetermined if any civilians were injured.

The fire was quickly knocked down internally, but firefighters remained at the scene to check for hidden pockets of fire as the investigation into the cause of the blaze begins. The Red Cross remains at the scene, helping to provide assistance to the displaced residents. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Police Athletic League on North Broadway.
