ARMONK, N.Y. Kerry Kennedy again pleaded not guilty to a DUI charge and rescheduled her next court date in a brief appearance Tuesday evening in North Castle Town Court.
Town Justice Elyse Lazansky granted Kennedy a rescheduled court date of Nov. 20. The date was granted to allow Kennedys new attorneys, including New York City criminal attorney Gerald Lefcourt, to become more acquainted with the case. Kennedys former lawyer, Robert Gottlieb, did not make an appearance at the hearing.
Kennedys court appearance Tuesday night was in stark contrast to her previous appearance on July 17, when she originally pleaded not guilty. Unlike after that hearing, Kennedy made no statements to the press that was waiting outside the courtTuesday and instead headed directly into her car following the court appearance.
Kennedy read a prepared statement to the press in July, saying that the accident was likely caused by a complex partial seizure while driving, and not the prescription drug Ambien. But a recently released report found that Kennedy had a generic prescription sleep aid in her bloodstream at the time of the crash.
I told the officer that it was theoretically possible that I had mistakenly taken an Ambien rather than a thyroid pill earlier that morning, Kennedy said outside the courtroom in July, adding that she took blood and urine tests at Northern Westchester Hospital. Those tests, along with the Breathalyzer I took at the police station, indicated no alcohol, recreational drugs or prescription medications in my system. The tests found no drugs or alcohol in my system at all.
Police say that on July 13 Kerry Kennedy hit a truck driven by Rocco Scuiletti on Interstate 684 in Armonk and he failed to report the accident to authorities. Kennedy was arrested after the accident and charged with driving under the influence.
Scuiletti of Poughkeepsie, was charged with leaving the scene of the accident in which Kennedy is accused of hitting his tractor-trailer. He pleaded not guilty in early August and has since requested a trial date.
