Following an investigation by facilities management, it was determined that the smell was coming from outside the building where the gas main is located underground, according to JJ Pryor, managing director of the Office of Communications.

Con Edison and the fire department were called right away and the library was evacuated as a precaution, Pryor said.

Con Ed turned off the main gas valve to the library and gave Manhattanville the all clear to re-occupy the library.

The college has called a ConEd certified company to perform gas line repairs, she added.

No one was injured during the evacuation.
