Men Started Fight With Cops, Greenburgh Police Say

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Greenburgh police arrested two men who got into a fight with officers, one of them attempting to grab a handgun from an officer's holster, according to a police report.

About 11 p.m. Wednesday, officers approached a vehicle sitting in the rear parking lot of an apartment complex on Tarryhill Way. Three people were inside, and the police said they smelled marijuana.

A license check identified the driver as Ivette Montonez, 20, of Greenburgh and revealed she had a warrant out of New York City for second-degree promoting contraband, a misdemeanor.

Police tried to arrest Montonez, but the two men in the car, Gary Patterson, 18, of Philipstown, N.Y., and Anthony Gathers Jr., 21, of Greenburgh, attempted to interfere, police said. A physical fight ensued, and one of the suspects attempted to take the officer's gun by unsnapping the holster, police said. The altercation resulted in one officer suffering a bruised nose and a second officer sustaining a minor injury, police said.

Police arrested all three suspects and charged Patterson and Gathers with second-degree interfering with governmental administration, a misdemeanor. Patterson also was charged with third-degree robbery, a felony. Gathers also was charged with second-degree assault, a felony; and marijuana possession, a violation.

Montonez was turned over to the New York Police Department, while Patterson and Gathers were taken to Greenburgh police headquarters, where they were still being held as of 3:50 p.m. Thursday.
